Product Design Days + Yanko Design RoadShow

Product Design Days + Yanko Design RoadShow

When I spoke with Scott Wilson, the force behind Lunatik and Tik Tok watches and asked him about the biggest flaw he saw in Kickstarter and other crowdsourcing platforms, he said finding a dependable manufacturer and a logistical supply chain for the product was the biggest drawback. Essentially, you may have a brilliant design, the seed funding, but no reliable support in the manufacturing process. Here is where Product Design Days and the Yanko Design RoadShow fit into your success story by overcoming this flaw.

Happy New Year – I hope that you’re having a good one. I’ve got a day of shopping planned (Winter Sale starts today in Japan) – but wanted to leave something here on the blog for those of you with a little more time on your hands.
I thought I’d take this opportunity to reflect back on the year. This post contains some highlights for this blog and the top 10 design from the last 12 months of archives.

Best of Best – Red Dot Product Design 2011

Best of Best – Red Dot Product Design 2011

I can give you hundreds of definitions of what is a good design, right from Dieter Rams to Jonny Ive. The bottom line I think is just this, a good design is what appeals to the individual at that particular moment and if it solves a purpose for him/her, then even better! Red Dot Product Design is one jury that looks at all the angles and aspects of a design. For 2011 they have summed up their Best of Best designs and here is a small recap of my pick – 21 Good Designs in all!

Best of Yanko Design 2009

Best of Yanko Design 2009

The year 2009 can be marked as one of the most defining years for Yanko Design and its community. The year can be re-capped with the Best of 2009, but on the same note it’s important to iterate our accomplishments. When the world was facing its worst global recession in decades, (including the design industry as a whole), YD on its part grew its outlook by innovating to stay ahead of the game. For a moment you can actually say that Innovation has been the theme symbolic to YD and this year’s best designs.

15 Amazing Best of Best: 2012 red dot product design

To quote Professor Dr. Peter Zec “Companies have realized that investing in design offers a considerable added value. In the end, the design of a product is the most important incentive for the purchase decision of a consumer.” We totally agree! The winners of the 2012 red dot product design were recently announced and like last year, the official Gala will be in July. Here is a quick look at the 15 products that won the coveted Best of Best 2012 red dot product design. Cheers to Good Design!

Steve Jobs hired designer Hartmut Esslinger as the modern-day Snow White for his projects code-named after the seven dwarfs. The vision was to infuse Apple products with “born-in-America gene” and DNA inspired by “Hollywood and music, a bit of rebellion and natural sex appeal.” Hartmut’s mantra was simple, “Form follows emotion,” a twist on the maxim that form follows function. Yanko Design respects both these aphorisms but believes that we should not limit creativity within the realms of form, function and emotions; thus we follow Form Beyond Function.
